The Port Jefferson Branch past Huntington is diesel territory, and nothing funded today changes that. News 12 Long Island's October 1, 2026 report describes the branch as a diesel-operated section of the LIRR, and the Governor's office said on September 30, 2026 that there are no current plans or funding for the branch improvements that would need a new rail yard. For anyone weighing Saint James homes against a job in Manhattan, the station is part of the address, and its rules read like any other line item.
Where the St. James station sits in the fare chart
The MTA's St. James station page lists the stop on the Port Jefferson Branch as an accessible station, with a ramp, tactile warning strips and audiovisual passenger information. The station table in the November 9, 2026 branch timetable puts St. James in Zone 10, the same zone as Kings Park, Smithtown, Stony Brook and Port Jefferson.
What that means for a buyer: the fare from St. James and from the Smithtown stop one station west is the same, so a choice between the two comes down to the train times and the drive to the lot, not the ticket price.
The change at Huntington
The Port Jefferson Branch schedule page for September 8 to November 8, 2026 explains the letters in its reference notes, and T stands for "Transfer at Huntington." The November 9 timetable still prints a T next to many St. James times, but its own reference notes define only A, B, E ("Transfer at Hicksville") and J ("Transfer at Jamaica"), with no entry for T.
Read across the St. James rows of the November 9 timetable, the pattern is clear:
- Weekday westbound, the departures at 5:08, 5:33, 6:10, 6:30, 6:56, 7:26 and 7:49 a.m. carry no transfer mark.
- Weekday westbound, the 8:26 a.m., 11:01 a.m., 12:23 p.m. and 2:17 p.m. departures carry the T.
- On weekends, every westbound departure after the 5:04 a.m. train carries the T.
The same timetable says transfers are shown only for select trains and points riders to the TrainTime app for the full set of options. So the marks are a floor, not a full count.
The morning column is the part that carries the weight. A buyer who commutes at peak hours rides the part of the schedule with no printed transfer; a buyer who works hybrid hours or travels midday and on weekends rides the part where a change at Huntington is the normal trip. The same house carries two different commutes depending on the hour.
What a Zone 10 ticket costs
The fare table in the same timetable, for trips to and from New York and Brooklyn, lists these Zone 10 prices:
- Monthly: $394.50
- Weekly: $140.25
- Peak one-way: $21.50
- Off-peak one-way: $16.00
The timetable describes the monthly ticket as unlimited rides in the calendar month printed on it, on sale from the 25th of the prior month, and non-transferable.
For a household budget, the monthly ticket is a fixed cost a daily commuter pays twelve times a year, and it belongs on the same sheet as the tax bill.
The bill itself is covered in my Saint James property taxes guide.
The November 9, 2026 schedule change
The MTA's service change notice, updated October 26, 2026, says new schedules start on all LIRR branches on Monday, November 9, 2026. Departure times change on many midday weekday and weekend trains, some trains leave earlier than they do now, and the notice says there are no major changes to rush hour service. For the Port Jefferson Branch, it adds a weekend local train to Penn Station leaving Hicksville at 4:33 p.m., with a return from Penn Station at 10:02 p.m. The new branch timetable runs to February 28, 2027.
For a buyer timing a trip from Saint James this week, the sheet in use still ends November 8. Peak trains are the part the MTA says stays close to the current times; midday and weekend trips are the part that moves, so a Saturday trip planned on the old sheet may not match the train that actually runs after November 9.
Parking and the station building
The Town of Smithtown's St. James station sheet says all parking facilities at the station are operated by the Town, which handles snow removal, maintenance, bike lockers and parking permits there, while the LIRR handles the station, platforms and tracks. The sheet's legend marks the station parking as needing no fee or permit and notes that there is no bus service at this station. It carries a date of November 2018, and the Town Clerk's LIRR parking page is where the current sheets are posted.
The MTA page lists no ticket office at St. James. A ticket machine sits in a kiosk just west of the station building, and the MTA points riders to the TrainTime app to buy ahead.
The Town's resident permit for parks and beaches is a separate program, covered in my moving to Smithtown guide.
For a buyer, no bus connection means the trip to the train starts with a walk or a drive, so the distance from a given house to the Railroad Avenue lots is part of the daily commute. For a seller, the line that holds up in a listing is the distance to the station, stated plainly, rather than a trip time that depends on which train the buyer takes.
The rail yard land and electrification
The Governor's announcement of September 30, 2026 says the MTA acquired more than 46 acres of the former Lawrence Aviation site at 100 Sheep Pasture Road in Port Jefferson Station, buying it for $10 from the Suffolk County Land Bank. The release says there are no current plans or funding for the type of Port Jefferson Branch improvements that would require a rail yard there, and that the purchase preserves the railroad's ability to evaluate them. News 12's report adds that the MTA's current capital plan includes a study of potential improvements to the branch.
For a buyer, electrification is a possibility on paper, with no funding and no schedule, so a decision on a Saint James house rests on the diesel service printed in the current timetable. For a seller, a listing that hints at electric service on the way goes past anything the State has said.
Saint James houses and the commute
The six Saint James houses I have sold between 2015 and 2024 each had three or four bedrooms, and their median year built is 1988. None of that sales data shows how far each house sat from the station, which is why a timed trip from the actual address tells a buyer more than a listing line about being near the LIRR.
Those sales are on my recently sold page.
The one check before an offer
The check that matters before an offer on a Saint James house is one timed trip from the address on the November 9, 2026 timetable: the walk or drive to the Railroad Avenue lots, the train the household would actually ride at its real hour, and whether that train carries the T for Huntington. A weekday 7 a.m. trip and a Saturday noon trip read differently on the same timetable, and both are worth one run before a contract is signed.
