Moving to Smithtown comes down to four setups: electric service with PSEG Long Island, a water account with the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) where it serves the house, Town of Smithtown trash and recycling days set by carter district, and a Town resident parking permit for parks and beaches. The housing side of the town is on my Smithtown homes page; this guide is the setup list for the weeks around a closing.
TL;DR
- PSEG Long Island handles electric service; its online stop requests need at least 72 hours of notice, and National Grid handles gas questions.
- SCWA opens water accounts through a moving-in application with a service-by date, one photo ID, and a $30 initiation fee.
- Town garbage runs twice a week by carter district, and recycling is every Wednesday in two streams.
- Town parks and beaches are for residents, and the 2026 permit is registered by license plate.
- Kings Park, Smithtown, and St. James are the three LIRR stations in the town, all on the Port Jefferson Branch.

Electric and gas: PSEG Long Island and National Grid
PSEG Long Island's service requests page splits start service into new and existing residential customers, so an existing customer moves the account rather than opening a new one. The online start form asks for identity details, such as a Social Security number or other documentation. Its residential stop service form says online requests need at least 72 hours of notice.
Gas is a separate account. PSEG Long Island's pages send gas concerns to National Grid.
Water: Suffolk County Water Authority
The seller's water bill shows which provider serves a given address. Where that is SCWA, its moving page splits the job into moving in, which opens or transfers an account, and moving out, which schedules a final meter reading.
The SCWA moving-in application asks for:
- The property address and a mailing address
- Whether the applicant is an owner occupant or a lease tenant
- A "need service by" date
- One photo ID: a driver's license, state ID card, or passport
SCWA lists a $30.00 initiation fee and, for lease tenants, a $50.00 deposit. Baseline quarterly charges accrue on every open account whether or not water is used, so a house sitting empty after closing still carries them. Switching a home from a private well to public water is a separate option on SCWA's start service page.
Trash, recycling, and the Municipal Services Facility
The Town of Smithtown sets collection by carter district. Its 2026 Refuse and Recyclables Collection Schedule has a carter district map, and garbage goes out twice a week, Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday depending on the district, placed at the curb the night before.
The Town's refuse and recycling sheet adds the house rules:
- Curbside containers can hold up to 32 gallons and 50 pounds, with lids secured.
- Recycling is collected every Wednesday in two streams: paper and cardboard separately from plastic, metal, and glass.
- Furniture and large appliances are not collected with regular trash; pickups are scheduled with the district's carter.
- A regular can works for recycling with a Town recycling sticker, available at no charge from the Municipal Services Facility (MSF) in Kings Park or the Department of Environment and Waterways.
The 2026 calendar lists holidays with no pickup, including November 26 and December 25, with no make-up day. The Town's refuse and recycling calendar page covers other drop-offs, such as cooking oil at MSF.
Parks, beaches, and the resident parking permit
The Town's About Smithtown page counts 25 town parks and four state parks, and names the town's beaches as Short Beach, Long Beach, Kings Park Bluff, and Callahan's Beach.
Town facilities are restricted to town residents, according to the Town's park ranger FAQ. Beginning May 2026, the Town's parks permit system registers vehicles by license plate, online or with in-person help at the Town Clerk's Office. The online steps ask for:
- The permit type: residential, senior, or veteran
- Name, contact, and vehicle information
- A driver's license and vehicle registration
- Proof of residency, if the vehicle is not registered to a Smithtown address
That last line matters when a car is still registered at the old address. The Town lists a $5 processing fee per vehicle plus card fees, and residents over 65 and veterans receive permits at no charge with proof of eligibility. The Parks, Buildings and Grounds department maintains the parks and beaches and issues camping and picnic permits.
LIRR stations in the Town of Smithtown
The Town counts three LIRR stations inside its borders, all on the Port Jefferson Branch. The MTA station pages (updated October 13) describe each as accessible, with ticket machines and no ticket office. Scheduled Penn Station times are on my Smithtown homes page.
Smithtown station
The MTA Smithtown page lists a weekday waiting area from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed weekends, and Suffolk County Transit connections. The Town's Smithtown station parking sheet says all parking there is operated by the Town and shows an off-peak area with no parking from 5 to 8 a.m.
St. James station
The MTA St. James page lists a weekday waiting area from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., closed weekends. The Town's St. James station sheet notes no bus service at that station. More on the hamlet itself is in my Saint James homes page and buying in Saint James guide.
Kings Park station
The MTA Kings Park page lists a waiting area from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends. The Town's Kings Park station sheet marks one lot as not commuter parking.
At all three, the Town's LIRR parking page and station sheets put lot maintenance, snow removal, and parking permits with the Town, and the platforms and tracks with the LIRR. The sheets describe the lots as unrestricted with no fee or permit required; the Smithtown sheet is dated 11/18, so the Town Clerk's Office confirms current rules.
Lining up the dates around a closing
Most of this list hangs on the closing date:
- The buyer's PSEG Long Island start or move request, and the seller's stop request at least 72 hours ahead if made online.
- The SCWA moving-in application with a matching service-by date, and the seller's final meter reading.
- The carter district from the Town map, for the first trash and recycling nights.
- The parks permit, once a registration or proof of residency shows the Smithtown address.
