Overview
Coram is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, in Suffolk County. It borders Middle Island to the east, Medford to the south, and Selden to the west. The nearest Long Island Rail Road station is Port Jefferson, on the Port Jefferson Branch, 4.4 miles from the center of Coram. Weekday morning trains from Port Jefferson to Penn Station run about 101 to 104 minutes, scheduled time on board.
The Census Bureau estimates 16,304 homes in Coram CDP. About half are detached single family houses, with the rest split between small multi-unit buildings and attached one-unit homes. Most of the housing stock dates from 1970 to 1989. Two bedrooms is the most common size, and 69% of homes are owner occupied.
Parks near the center include Pine Ridge Golf Club, 0.3 miles away, and Diamond in the Pines Park, 0.5 miles away. FEMA's mapped flood zones show under 1% of Coram CDP in either the high-risk Special Flood Hazard Area or the moderate-risk shaded Zone X, an estimate for the mapped area rather than any single property.
Coram has no government of its own; the Town of Brookhaven handles zoning, permits and roads, and its Building Division processes building permits and certificates of occupancy. Three districts serve the area, Longwood Central School District, Middle Country Central School District and Brookhaven-Comsewogue Union Free School District, and the district for a specific address is set by its tax bill. PSEG Long Island delivers electricity, National Grid supplies natural gas, and the Suffolk County Water Authority serves most streets.

District lines are drawn independently of hamlet and ZIP code lines, so two houses with the same mailing address can sit in different districts.
Distances are straight-line from the centre of the town, not driving distance. Many town beaches, marinas and ramps require a resident permit. Check with the town before you go. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
